Restoration of the Historic Reichenbach Synagogue, Munich
As a donor, the Blank Art Foundation is sponsoring the “Verein Synagoge Reichenbachstraße e.V.” in the restoration of a unique architectural monument between “Bauhaus” and “Neue Sachlichkeit”. Inaugurated in 1931, it was probably the most modern sacred building in the city at the time – with a uniquely coloured prayer room.
After the war, the synagogue was the centre of Jewish religious life in Munich until the opening of the Ohel Jakob Synagogue in 2006, after which the building stood empty and fell into disrepair.

Since 2013, thanks to the energetic initiative of Dr Rachel Salamander, the “Verein Synagoge Reichenbachstraße e.V.” has been raising substantial funds to restore the interior and exterior of the building to its original state. The restoration project is due to be completed in 2025 and the synagogue will also be reopened as a future educational centre.
